Why Don’t Edibles Get Me High?

Most people who consume cannabis do so by smoking it. However, there is another way to get the benefits of the plant – edibles. While edibles are becoming increasingly popular, many people don’t understand why they don’t seem to get high when they eat them.

In this blog post, we will explore the differences between smoking and eating cannabis and what factors may affect how you feel after consuming edibles.

The Difference Between Edibles and Smoking

When you smoke cannabis, the THC enters your bloodstream almost instantaneously as it passes from the lungs into your bloodstream. This way, the THC can reach your brain very quickly, allowing you to immediately experience a psychoactive high.

When you eat edibles, however, the THC must be processed by your liver before reaching your brain. The liver changes the THC into another chemical called 11-Hydroxy-THC which then travels into the bloodstream and to the brain.

This process takes significantly longer than smoking (30 minutes to 2 hours), which largely explains why the high from edibles is far different and lasts much longer.

Ediblocked

Some people who use cannabis can’t feel edibles’ effects when used at standard dosages. This is known as “ediblocked.” Scientists are not sure why this occurs, but they have a few theories.

One possible reason is that the liver converts THC into 11-Hydroxy-THC at different rates based on your body’s unique chemistry. The liver may be breaking down THC so quickly that it does not have time to cause the intoxicating effects.

This can be difficult for those taking edibles for medical reasons as they rely on THC for relief. However, people who are ediblocked usually still feel the effects of smoking marijuana.

Eating Disorders and Edibles

There is another reason you may not feel the effects of edibles. For example, some people who suffer from eating disorders, such as anorexia or bulimia, may be unable to feel the effects of edibles.

In a part of the brain responsible for integrating food with our emotional response to eating, researchers discovered that the brain’s marijuana-like neurotransmitter system was significantly reduced in women with anorexia or bulimia.

For these women, there is a problem with the insula region of the brains, and they cannot fully enjoy food’s pleasure, triggering harmful rituals and reactions. The insula integrates the sensory experience of food, emotions, and our thoughts. This may be why people with eating disorders can’t feel the effects of edibles.

Why Don’t Edibles Get Me High FAQ

What does it mean if edibles don’t affect you?

There are a few possible reasons why edibles don’t affect you. One possibility is that the liver breaks down THC too quickly for it to reach your brain. It may also be that you can’t feel the effects because of an eating disorder. Or you may be taking too low of a dose to feel the impact.

Why don’t you feel edibles the first time?

It can take up to 2 hours for an edible to affect you. If you don’t feel the effects soon after eating, wait at least 2 hours and try again with a small increment. Also, if your stomach is full, it can take longer to metabolize the THC.

How long should you wait before you eat more edibles?

Do not consume more of the marijuana edible until at least 2-4 hours have passed. The effects of edibles tend to take a long time to manifest themselves. It’s very easy to overeat edibles if they’re consumed too rapidly.

Closing on Why Don’t Edibles Get Me High

The effects of edibles vary on the individual and can take anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours for them to set in. Some people may not feel any effect, while others may experience a high lasting 6-8 hours or even longer.

Some individuals cannot feel the effects of edibles unless they take a high dose. Scientists are uncertain why this is the case.

If you can enjoy the experience of an edible high, it might cause feelings of happiness, relaxation, or euphoria, but please use it responsibly!
